Install Motion Detection Lighting
This goes for protecting more than just your garage door, but it's important nonetheless. Darkness is the ideal protection for anyone who's looking to break in one way or another, as it provides them cover to work unseen. Lights that come on the moment movement is detected will ensure that they won't have the safety of darkness to hide in, and in many cases this alone may be enough to scare them off and instead go for a home that isn't shining a spotlight on them. -
Use A Timer/Phone App
If you're prone to forgetting to close your garage door due to being busy or a lot of people coming in and out of your home, it's best to make sure your door will be closed even if someone forgets to do it himself. Many openers have a timer setting so you can tell them to close at a certain time, so even if it your door was left open, you won't have to worry about it staying that way. Newer and more costly models even come with the ability to use your phone to check its status and close it wherever you may be. These options are expensive, but so is being robbed! If you're the forgetful type, it may be worth it. -
Keep All Doors Locked
Many people leave the door that leads into their garage unlocked so that they won’t have to bother with unlocking it when they return, thus relying on the garage door itself to act as a locked door. However, garage doors aren't foolproof and there are ways for thieves to get them open. Leaving your opener in your car makes an easy target for them to steal it and use it to get the door open, and there's even a way for them to pull the emergency release cord with a hanger by cracking open the top panel of the door. Making sure that all doors into your home are locked completely, deadbolt and all, is for the best in terms of safety, even if it is more inconvenient too.
